Bamboo Shoots

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Concrete Jungle fans: Be sure to check out the band “Bamboo Shoots.”

New York City’s Bamboo Shoots is a five-piece outfit founded by Avir Mitra and Karl Sukhia in 2004. It represents the latest step in a long journey for these two South Asian musicians originally from Southern New Jersey who have been songwriting partners since the age of 16. As Avir puts it, “South Asian sounds and influences are all over the place, but the voices of Indian Americans themselves have been mostly absent.” Bamboo Shoots is changing that in the United States. “Just by being ourselves on stage we are challenging stereotypes.”

Joined by drummers Shiv Puri, Ankur Patel and guitarist Ahmed Mahmoud, the band’s grass roots efforts have garnered them a huge following as they draw crowds to major venues on the East Coast including New York City’s Knitting Factory and Galapagos and Philadelphia’s Khyber. Bamboo Shoots receive great reception from the college radio market, receiving airplay on over 200 college radio stations nationwide and charting consistently in several markets. In May 2007, Bamboo Shoots won mtvU’s “Best Music on Campus Artist of the Year” contest, receiving a multi-record recording deal with Epic Records and performing on the Late Show with Conan O’Brien.

Their profile is growing rapidly as they currently work with producer Jerry Harrison (guitarist/keyboardist of Talking Heads and producer of No Doubt, Live, Foo Fighters) on their debut full-length album for Epic Records.

Their unique sound can be described as: Daft Punk meets Alice in Chains. Graceland in Space. The Police produced by Timbaland. LeVar Burton.
